BERKELEY/OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA – Where to Eat Vegan and Gluten-Free

I have called Berkeley home for 4 years now, so trust me when I say I have found the BEST vegan and gluten-free options the Bay has to offer. When you visit, I hope you also take time to enjoy the fabulous weather, vast hiking options, plentiful critters (I hope you like sea birds), and some gorgeous coastline that is unlike anywhere I’ve been before. However be prepared for some sticker shock– food (and everything else) is EXPENSIVE here!

Humbowl

  • 100% GF (not a “dedicated” facility but there is absolutely no gluten in any foods they prepare)
  • Mostly vegan, serves meat
  • Brunch/Lunch/Dinner – Health-conscious
  • $
  • Our go-to for healthy, simple, and delicious protein-rich bowls
  • Address: 2975 College Ave, Berkeley
  • Don’t skip: Togarashi Bowl or the Vegan Hash + legumes mix and tofu

Timeless coffee

  • GF options (limited)
  • 100% vegan
  • Coffee/Breakfast/Pastries
  • $
  • The coffee here is SO GOOD, and the vibe is really fun and edgy. Limited GF options, but everything is vegan here, so grab up any GF options you can find. If you go on the weekend, chances are you can find some breakfast sandwiches or bagels too! (Very likely not GF unfortunately, but they change their menu often so there is a chance!)
  • Address(es): 4252 Piedmont Ave. Oakland, CA 94611, 1700 Webster St, Oakland, CA 94612
  • Don’t skip: Almond milk latte

Bageltopia

  • GF bagel options
  • Lots of vegan options: Vegan bagels + vegan menu!
  • Brunch
  • $
  • If you want a huge selection of breakfast bagels, Bageltopia’s got you! For every non-vegan item on the menu, they have a vegan equivalent — AND you can sub a gluten-free bagel for any menu item. If you are celiac, let them know (they usually ask anyway), and they prepare your bagel in a separate section of the kitchen. This place is the best!
  • Address: 1401 University Avenue, Berkeley
  • Don’t skip: Vegan Farmstand or Vegan Tuna Salad

Cafe Leila

  • GF options
  • Vegan options
  • Brunch/Lunch – Mediterranean
  • $$
  • Make sure you dine in here – not only are their food and drinks delicious, but they have a beautiful outdoor garden seating area with fountains, trees, flowers, and other decor that makes hanging out here so much fun. Unfortunately they don’t have gluten-free toast here, so Evan usually gets corn tortillas on the side.
  • Address: 1724 San Pablo Ave, Berkeley, CA 94702
  • Don’t skip: Veggie Tyab (no lavash bread or sub with a GF option) or Vegan Tofu Scramble (also get a smoothie — they have so many options)

Marafuku ramen

  • GF options (not safe for celiacs, as there is trace gluten in the broth)
  • Vegan options
  • Lunch/Dinner – Japanese
  • $$
  • This ramen is truly SO GOOD, 100% the best I have found in the Bay Area. They only have 1 vegan ramen option, but you really don’t need anything else. The broth is so creamy and flavorful, and you can sub GF noodles. I remove the egg and add mushrooms and nori to mine, and it is *chef’s kiss*.
  • Address: 4828 Telegraph Ave, Oakland, CA 94609 (SF location: 1581 Webster St. Ste 235 SF, CA 94115)
  • Don’t skip: Vegetable ramen -egg, sub GF noodles

Malibu’s Burgers

  • GF options (GF buns available, cross contamination likely)
  • 100% vegan
  • Lunch/Dinner – American
  • $
  • If you are craving fast food burgers, this is your place! These are so good. They are all vegan, and you can sub a GF bun or a lettuce wrap for any burger. Celiacs should avoid as it is not dedicated gluten free.
  • Address: 3905 Piedmont Ave, Oakland, CA 94611
  • Don’t skip: Malibu burger with GF bun

Tane (pronounced tah-ney)

  • GF options (plenty)
  • 100% vegan
  • Lunch/Dinner – Japanese (sushi)
  • $$$
  • This place is perfect for a special occasion (or if you want to spend $70+ on dinner for two), but even though it’s pricey, my goodness is it delicious. The sushi rolls here feel like they are crafted by chefs that strive to bring out the greatness in plants instead of depending on meat mimics (not that I don’t love a good mimic). Each roll is very unique and they have so many gluten free options to try. (They have a slightly fancier sister restaurant in San Francisco called Shizen – the menu is similar but would recommend trying both as some rolls are unique to each location).
  • Address: 1956 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley, CA 94704
  • Don’t skip: Miso soup, grilled shishito, Baker, Ewa, Sunset, Wedge

Millenium

  • GF options (plenty)
  • 100% vegan
  • Dinner – New American
  • $$$
  • Another great place for a special occasion, Millenium has amazing gluten free offerings from a 100% vegan menu. Please note that they have a 4-course prix fixe menu that you must order if you go on Friday or Saturday (unless you sit at the bar, then you can order a la carte). The prix fixe is $72/person — delicious but pricey!
  • Address: 5912 College Ave, Oakland, CA 94618
  • Don’t skip: House-made pickles and Millenium Burger

Oori’s Rice Triangles

  • GF options
  • Vegan options
  • Lunch/Dinner – Japanese
  • $
  • If you have never had rice triangles, this is your sign to go get some! They are very similar to sushi, but more fun to eat (in my opinion). This is a very ‘fast food’ vibe — you just roll in, type in what you want on the tablet, and they hand you a bag to go. The teriyaki sauce is gluten free, so make sure you grab extra portions to drizzle on your triangles.
NOTE: while there are many gluten free OR vegan options, there are only two gluten-free AND vegan options. See below.
  • Address: 2177 Shattuck Ave, Berkley, CA 94704, 6000 College Ave, Oakland, CA 94618, 1247 Solano Ave, Albany, CA 94706, 4066 Piedmont Ave, Oakland, CA 94611
  • Don’t skip: Tofu Teriyaki triangle (with extra sauce), Ume triangle (sour/sweet Japanese plum, very tasty!)

Shangri-La Vegan

  • 100% gluten free (does not state dedicated GF facility)
  • 100% vegan
  • Lunch/Dinner – Tibetan
  • $
  • For those of us with decision fatigue, this place is the best. There is only one order, and you can either get a “moderate” or “full” portion. Every plate comes with lentil soup, salad, a bean dish, and vegetable dish, and some rice. They have free tea when you dine in and plenty of gluten free, vegan desserts to choose from if you’d like. If you are looking for something simple, warm, flavorful, healthy, and oh-so delicious, this is your spot.
  • Address: 4905 Telegraph Ave. Oakland, CA 94609 and 4001 Linden St., Oakland, CA 94608
  • Don’t skip: Key lime pie
